I’ll prob sound like a lunatic here.
I thought Rings of Power was good enough to try S2. Like a 6/10. It’s been boring as hell. I’m actually skimming most of it and doing that, I caught a funeral in Numenor (I think - the human city) and during the funeral they talked about “the white shores and the far green country.” They were basically quoting exactly from Tolkien.
I am not a book purist at all, I’ve read it once. But it pissed me off just based on the movies so I did some googling and this line was from a dream Frodo had at Tom Bombadil’s and if I understand right was about the afterlife.
But the real reason the show scene annoys me so much is this is my favorite scene in the movie series. And the implication with their dumbass scene is that this is not a wise, authentic Gandalf line. This is just some funeral rite he stole from the Numenorians and passed off to Pippin as his own wisdom. Not only that, those humans can’t know what the afterlife or Valinor or whatever looks like. Gandalf has logical reasons to know, even though the line isn’t actually his in the books.
PIPPIN: I didn't think it would end this way.
GANDALF: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.
PIPPIN: What? Gandalf? See what?
GANDALF: White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.
PIPPIN: Well, that isn't so bad.
GANDALF: No. No, it isn't.
