The NCAA will allow athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness

Sounds like UNLV is coming out saying all agreed upon NIL deals where met.

This might be a "I've played really well, I'm going to redshirt this year and go for the big bucks somewhere next year"  I hope not, but there is some smoke now leaning that way.

Not a great look for UNLV. There was a "report" earlier this morning that Sluka just demanded more money after their good start, but it was first circulated by essentially a UNLV PR guy so seems a little dubious. Sucks for the team and Sluka, but honestly if you don't put your foot down somewhere the promises with no intent to fulfill them will continue. Contracts would be nice.

Contracts are mandatory. Shady stuff will continue to happen until both sides are legally obligated to fulfill a contract.

If only players could come together as a group and talk about the things and protections they want the most. IDK some kind of... collective agreement where they advocate for each other and the schools sign an agreement on their end. Probably impossible and unheard of!

In all seriousness, the schools and NCAA have done this to themselves. They've illegally operated a system that's exploitive, and they're trying to salvage the worst elements that obviously won't stand up in court. Even with the most recent agreement that was poised to pay players up to $20 million, the fact that schools tried to limit the off the field earnings was stupid. They need to get serious and just recognize players as athletes and stop kicking the can down the can down the road.

I didn't think anyone within the Athletic Department had any say in NIL goings on?  How could the coach be involved in a meeting about the kid's NIL deal?

So they were pulling the rug out from under the kid?

I don't blame him for seeking more money no matter what, but it sounds like UNLV's collective made promises they did not intend to keep.

The story seems to be that the UNLV coach(es) made promises but didn't get the collective to sign off on it.  Nothing in writing.

Well, those rules are enforced and put together by the NCAA, which are kind of toothless. I think schools comply because they don't want to risk punishment, but really anything goes. The NCAA is pretty scared to enforce any rule because most of their rules are being eviscerated in court.

That's just sad, but the lesson is important. Always get it in writing!

ESPN Radio had a little different spin on it- basically nothing was put in writing according to them.  If it was just a verbal agreement between him and his "agent", then who know who is really at fault here.  Tough situation for all involved though.
