What did we learn Indiana edition

Another underrated thing that has happened this season though is that the schedule wound up being way tougher than the majority of fans (including myself) thought it would be in the offseason.

From the fans' perspective, the "chasing 3" thing was predicated on the idea that if we went 5-7 last year and lost several of those games by 3 points, all we needed was a QB with a pulse and that record would go to either 7-5 or 8-4.

Well we got the QB with a pulse, and he's actually good even as a true freshman. But it turned out that Illinois and Indiana are actually good. That part will be huge in factoring into the final W/L column.

This year's team probably doesn't lose to last year's Minnesota, Maryland, or Michigan State. But it turns out that this doesn't mean anything for this season at all.

 
Why not steal some of Indiana’s offense?  They seemed to get the ball out quick while our stuff takes forever to develop.  Ours looks great when you have all day vs a Northern IA but not so much against B1G defenses.

Georgia - 7 games 130.3 rushing yards per game

Nebraska - 7 games 127.1 rushing yards per game

Looks pretty close to me.  I think what you meant to say is that Georgia is just a better overall team regardless of that.   :)

No I bet he means actually watch a game and you can see the difference. It doesn’t look pathetic like our rushing attack. Being similar in yards means next to nothing if they are say passing for 350 a game. It just means they run less but are much more effective when they do. They just choose to pass more because they are great at that. 
 

we are not good at either so the run means more to us. They can run when they need to and want to. For example they run punch it in from the 2 yard line against a top 5 team.

Good coaches either recruit players that fit their scheme or adjust scheme to available talent.  

A more interesting question to me - what offense would Indiana's coaches run with our players?

A competent one 

in all seriousness- that is what’s most troubling to me post Indiana. Indiana displayed simply blocking concepts coupled with complimentary run designs that simply cut us up badly. We are so bland with our rushing attack. Our idea of outside run is via a wr in motion. For whatever reason when our line does open lanes our RBs are completely missing the hole and running right into guys. It’s not one thing that ails this team, it’s a systemic mess

Which says a lot about our first several games,  wherein that was not much of an issue.  We were at home, except for Purdue, and we won pillow fights, basically, with the notable exception of unstable Colorado with their unstable coach.  What we see against a (rather new) well-run team, Indiana and OSU to come, is just what you said there:  Lack of motion and creativity.  That's Nebraska right now.  The score is the result of that because it was happening on O and D.

It’s hard to do motion and creativity if you’re not executing on the basics. Our lone Td sat was a nicely drawn up play.  Motion and creativity loses its effectiveness if you have zero threat to run traditional run plays with success. Indiana snuffed out a couple of our more creative play designs Saturday.

IMO That’s just not true though.   The whole point of pre snap movement is to try and get your offense into an advantage situation and create a bad matchup for the defense.   The bad match up is either getting better one on one matchups, creating a better blocking angle, and/or allowing the young QB to get a better presnap read.  Make it so the defense can’t fully adjust and match up how the Defense wants.   

 
I learned we saw the difference between a freshman Qb and a QB who's won a bunch of games.  For everyone complaining that our WR don't get separation go look at some of the catches IU WR have made.  Defenders right with them.  Their QB just puts it on them an they make a play.  I feel like Dylan really doesn't have that confidence right now to throw to someone who not wide open.  I also learned that nobody on the team knows how to follow or read blockers.  Its not jus the RBs. 

 
What did we learn? Let's not overthink it. The inability to run effectively (3.7 ypc this year aint gonna cut it). Inability to stop the run. Receivers who can neither get separation against tight/press man, nor perimeter block worth a darn. Special teams that are an absolute liability.

Throw that against a qb (and his backup!) throwing dimes to receivers who are playmakers...well you got a recipe for a butt whoopin.

I suspect some of the consternation of husker fans is compounded a bit because we see Indiana rolling along- we think, why can't that be us?

It will be interesting to see how Indiana continues, especially with their qb1 out for some time. I get the feeling they will be just fine.

No one realistically expects us to win in the Shoe...but how we come out may be really telling on where we're at mentally. Some coaches need to start earning those checks

 If we lose by just say 14 I'd be ecstatic.
