What did we learn UCLA edition

You find a coach with a proven track record.  A hungry coach.  You embrace what made Nebraska good for so many years. Physical up front.  On both sides of the line.  Guys who played with a mean streak and were probably good for a penalty for playing past the whistle.  Knows how to run the friggin ball.  Rhule had a track record of "turning around programs", but then left. You find a coach that has this same mentality.  A guy who speaks his mind.  Doesn't give a sh!t about bulletin board material.  Who isn't about ice cream and feel good speeches.  A coach who expects and more importantly demands excellence.

A few weeks ago this was an entirely accurate representation of Rhule

I honestly never saw any of that in Rhule.  He lost me after the 75 yards in the 4th and landing body blows and gave us this season.  There's a HUGE difference in saying these things in a presser and following through.  Too date, for me, he is all bark and no bite.  Clean house at the end of the season and I'll back him one more year. Same staff and I'll be done with him as a HC. And I wasn't the laughing emoji.  I still can't  post reactions :D

What frustrates me the most is the BS that Rhule peddles in pressers. His body language does not instill confidence. He says stuff like, the players want to go out there and win one more game possibly two or three. That sends the message to his team that all we need is one more win so the team sets that as their expectations. I would have loved it if he came out and took responsibility for the loss and admitted that they were outcoached by a 2-5 team and then state that they will work hard to go out and win all remaining games. Even if that does not happen, at least set high expectations for your players rather than setting the bar low.

The fan base is also to blame for this as we tend to lower the bar and make it sound like getting to a bowl game is major progress. We have a 5 star recruit for QB and we run the most boring offense in the nation. Iowa has a more dynamic offense than us.
We need to stop making excuses for coaches and players. This team has one of the most supportive fan bases in the nation and the product on the field has been nothing but utter disappointment. It all starts with Rhule but his supporting cast are incompetent as well.

This.  I've thought for a few games that he was just trying to force the ball down the field and wasn't seeing the easy routes underneath.

But yesterday he wasn't even throwing to his primary read when they were open.  The TE down the seam was the primary read on the Pick Six.  It was open.  Wouldn't throw it.  On 4th & goal we had a rub route that was going to be open.  He bailed on that.

When you can't even get a guy to throw to his open primary receiver, it makes things basically impossible.

So obviously the pick six is completely on Raiola, and it was the biggest play of the game.

But I don't think Satterfield is off the hook for not recognizing earlier in a game when Raiola is off. We waited until we were down bad to start consistently bringing in a motion man to be a blocker in the run game. We started doing that after the pick six.

And then on that drive we score a touchdown.

I really would love to be a fly on the wall in any meetings where Rhule sits in on high-level offensive strategic discussions. This has just started to not make much sense.

I agree.  It's up to the coaches to put the players in a position to succeed.

But when you're putting them in that position and they just won't do what they're supposed to do/could do, that's also tough.

You could tell we weren't talented at RB heading into the UTEP game because of the language Rhule was using. If Dowdell had been head & shoulders above the other three returning guys, it would have been a good sign - because we already knew that the three returners weren't really very good. The Johnson's are barely "average," in my opinion.

"Average" could work with the right usage this year, but we really needed a back that was better than Dowdell to come in from the portal and help set up better success on 1st down.

But as I watch what our staff has been doing post-Purdue, I kind of doubt they would have even utilized a good running back adequately even if they had one at their disposal.

The staff looks pretty bad right now, IMO.

Agreed there also.

With the Bye coming up next week, the UCLA loss hurts a lot. With a win, we would have become bowl eligible, pressure off, team relaxes, and we use bye week to prepare with a different attitude. With the loss, monkey is now King Kong, and team has so much pressure and mentality is completely different. Team now has two weeks to think of this loss and the wasted chance, which can be daunting.

all good bro, going to the Chiefs MNF will help forget the loss.

It might be tough, but you’re getting paid a sh1t ton of money to handle tough. You should have multiple contingencies to handle these situations, including giving a non-shell-shocked QB a chance. You don’t keep doing the same thing.

After having a day to sit on this one, I'm still awestruck by the play of this team and its not even this years team, this has been status quo for 10-12 years maybe even longer. Which spans multiple coaches and ADs. I see a lot of talk about how the players are used to losing and its become the culture. Which I can totally understand, but I think its time we look deeper.

I hate to say it, but "the people in charge" probably need to be purged. Nebraska football feels like Blackberry to me and if we don't recognize it we are dead...and we might be already tbh.

The players are making bank too. They are paid to show up ready to play, know their roll and do it. The players are being paid to do tough things too.
