What is the future of the Republican Party?

I’ve seen this sentiment mentioned over and over for years and I just find it difficult to believe. The R’s have had multiple opportunities to jettison Trump and they never do.

Their easiest escape route would’ve been the impeachment for January 6th. They could’ve convicted, ridded themselves of him and taken a couple years to regroup and rebrand for the 2022 midterms.

Perhaps they do “quietly hope for it.” But their actions show that they have zero intent on taking any meaningful action, coalescing around new candidates, new message, new policies or legislation.

It's just weird.  Yes, that term fits.

All they have to do is not even nominate him. But, they are all so scared of going against him.  That's why it's Trump's party and no longer the Republican party.

I've brought it up before but it bears repeating - back in the day, a huge component of the illegal immigration 'problem' was seasonal - men would come in to the states to work the harvest or some kinds of seasonal jobs to send money back to their families, then they would go back. Clinton's immigration reform really turned this into an actual issue by incentivizing people to stay here permanently rather than risk crossing as they would do frequently in the past.

That and building the border fences in the 90s made it more difficult to go back and forth.

This. This is the part I still can't reconcile. Elected Republicans who've uttered this sentiment have been threatened -- both physically and electorally -- so there is an intimidation factor from the base.

At the same time, we've had two Presidential elections and numerous congressional races where Republicans using the anonymity of the voting booth confirmed or even increased their support for Trump and MAGA candidates. The RNC simply gave up and let itself be taken over by Trumps.

Now I'm watching former Trump staffers and Republican congresspeople stand up at the DNC, disavow their party, and actually endorse Kamala Harris. It feels like a corner has finally been turned, but of course it has not. This election will go down to the wire, and regardless of outcome at least 60 million Americans will have witnessed the entire 8 year Donald Trump s#!tshow and said "that's my guy."

The Republican Party has indeed been feckless, but this is still on the voters.

Kinzinger hit on it last night at the DNC - the GOP has radically changed.   Common sense conservatism vs the alt right nationalism of the Felon's era.
When people ask me why I am not voting for Trump, I will use this line.  Before I knew he was a maniac, I didn't like him because he is really just a right leaning big government guy.

We were told she was not a future leader of the party. And, here we are. Shes a chair of a committee.

It's almost like a certain someone just talks out their rear and makes stuff up to justify the actions of nefarious and unqualified officials. Wonder if that poster is still trying to convince other posters here or if they do it now to convince themselves their support of those officials is still appropriate?

I think we are f#&%ed and it’s only a matter of time, and there is no turning back. I think there’s a 50% chance we will be like Russia (best case) by 2050.
ding ding ding...we have a winner.    your prediction is looking to be accurate.    except it may not take till 2050
